Preparing for Surgery
Now that you and Dr. Kim have decided to proceed with surgery, our goal is to ensure you feel prepared, safe, and supported. Below is a guide to help you navigate the weeks leading up to your procedure.
Note: You will receive a detailed Patient Guide to Surgery during your office visit. Please use the Pre-operative Instruction Checklist to track your progress.
Medical Clearance
Before surgery, you must be medically cleared to ensure your safety during anesthesia and recovery. Please see the Sample Pre-op Clearance Form, which will be provided to you in the office.
- Schedule a clearance exam with your primary care physician and provide them with our Pre-op Medical Clearance Form.
- Complete all required blood work, EKGs, and Chest X-rays prior to surgery.
- You may need additional clearance from other specialists you see (such as a Cardiologist, Rheumatologist, Pain Management)
- Review all routine daily medications with your physician to confirm which should be taken or stopped before surgery.
- Stop all nicotine and smoking products at least 4 weeks prior to surgery.
- Contact our office immediately if you develop a fever, cold, or skin irritation near the surgical site before your procedure.
Getting your Home Ready
Since your operative arm will be immobilized in a sling or splint, please prepare your home for safety and independence:
- Remove all area rugs and secure loose electrical cords to avoid falls.
- Put items that you use often within easy reach before surgery, so you won’t have to reach them often.
- Prepare loose-fitting clothing that buttons or zips in the front.
- Consider meal prepping and store meals in easy-to-open containers.
- Arrange for someone who can help with everyday tasks like cooking, shopping, and laundry for first 1-2 weeks.
